2012 - Cultural Olympiad
MLA East of England supports the MLA Partnership Vision for 2012, that: “Museums, libraries and archives will help ensure that the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are an inclusive event. We will engage with young people, celebrate diversity and help deliver the best ever Games, sustaining a legacy for people in London and in all regions. We will champion the development of collections, audiences and workforce so that the 2012 Games will be a transformational event for the sector and our users.” Delivery of this vision will be through five key programmes, laid out in MLAP’s “Setting the Pace” prospectus (below) and designed to stimulate collaborative activity across and beyond the museum, archive and library sector. In outline, these are:
- The International Exhibitions Programme, re-interpreting UK collections by involving international curators and local communities, through a partnership project of museum and gallery exhibitions in the years leading up to 2012.
- The People’s Record, capturing people’s life stories in London and across the UK and their engagement with the Cultural Olympiad and the 2012 Games.
- The Record, setting a new standard for a comprehensive Games archive and enabling this rich legacy to be used to inform and inspire.
- Literature and Storytelling, inspiring young people by celebrating ‘London and the UK welcoming the world’ with the written and spoken word.
- Information Hubs, Showcasing the cultural wealth of London and the regions to an international audience.
- Shaping and promotion of “Setting the Pace” and participation in resulting planning meetings at sub-regional level
- Planned co-ordination of regional activity related to China in the build-up to the handover in late summer 2008
- Participation in the Culture Task Group, to deliver this section of the East of England’s 2012 plan, see http://www.eeda.org.uk/2518_2522.htm , and part-funding the region’s Cultural Programmer
- Building the legacy of the games, through our membership of the regional Legacy Trust advisory group
