MLA East of England and Maritime Heritage East have today published a report of the maritime holdings of archives and libraries. The report is based on a survey of collections from around the region and builds on previous work already carried out in museums in the region. The report which can be downloaded here details the extraordinary depth and breadth of material, covering subjects such as famous people - Nelson, Britten and Shackleton, to name but three - and famous ships such as the Titanic.
The report uncovered the wealth of material documenting the maritime life of the region, including seaside holidays, fishing, ship building and lighthouses. The report is accompanied by a summary report which provides an indication of the value of the research for the development of themes and narratives which can be used to attract tourists to the region, thus demonstrating the value of heritage for future economic prosperity.
